Hearing Aids and Mask Mode

Hearing Aids, Masks, and Mask Mode Well, we've made it a year with masks. However, many hearing aid wearers are still struggling to hear clearly in our Covid-19 environment. Last year, we posted some tips on wearing hearing aids and a mask. Now that it looks like masks will be around for a bit longer, let's dig a little deeper into hearing aids and mask mode.  Wearing Hearing Aids and a Mask Even though we've all been wearing masks for a year now, here's a refresher on wearing hearing aids and a mask: Use the masks with 4 strings vs elastic. These tie around the back of your head and nape of your neck with no pressure on the ears. You can find the pattern shown in the photo here.  Get a mask extender. These can be purchased, made, or makeshift (I’ve seen people use paperclips).  Attach the mask to a headband with buttons. This not only protects the backs of your ears from the elastic but keeps your hearing aids in place too. Be very careful when removing your mask. Covid 19 and Hearing Loss

Covid-19 and Hearing Loss   For many with hearing loss, Covid-19 and the use of masks have made communication a bit more difficult, as John Watter describes in his article. But is there more of a connection between Covid-19 and hearing loss than just masks? In an article by Forbes, the author links several publications with preliminary research into the side effects of Covid-19. As the virus is new, these studies look at small groups of people that reported changes after recovery.  Although these studies are only looking at small groups of people, they are from all over the world. Thailand, the United Kingdom, India, and globally as this pandemic has touched the world. Studies noted individuals with hearing loss in either one2 or both1,3 ears, increased Tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or Vertigo4.  These first several studies have discussed two possible side effects with a positive Covid-19 diagnosis and how it relates to hearing... Note: these things are possible as many people have recovered without these side-effects. Covid-19 a Virus Historically, other viruses have caused hearing loss in some individuals. This includes herpes, HIV, and measles5. Viruses can affect the hearing systems if the virus makes its way into the middle ear or other parts of the auditory pathway3, 5. For some individuals with Covid-19, this might have occurred.  Ototoxic Treatment The other possibility is ototoxicity. Ototoxicity or ototoxic refers to medications that can be harmful to the organs of hearing or balance. As medical professionals are trying to find what...

How do you safely wearing hearing aids and a mask? Here are a few tips to help keep you safe during Covid-19 and keep your hearing aids safely behind your ears. Wearing hearing aids and a mask Take extra precautions when removing the mask. Hearing aids can easily get caught on the elastic when removing them. Try taking your mask off only in one or two places (in the car or at home). This will help eliminate places to look if they do come loose and provide some extra security and awareness.  Attach the mask to a headband with buttons. This not only protects the backs of your ears from the elastic but keeps your hearing aids in place too. You can find a pattern for one here. If you have long hair you can also loop the elastic around a ponytail. Get a mask extender. These can be purchased, made, or makeshift (I've seen people use paperclips). These allow the mask to be secured around the back of your head vs. your ears. Use the masks with 4 strings vs elastic. These tie around the back of your head and nape of your neck with no...
